We know India for its unity through diversity. India has a very rich culture, and each 29 state of India has its traditions. The tradition, which reflects in their language, food, dance forms, and attires. Here we have analyzed the traditional dress for every 29 states in India.

1.Andhra Pradesh

The traditional dress of Andhra Pradesh is handloom sarees for women. The fabric is silk with a rich texture and color. Andhra is famous for its kalamkari sarees, and their sarees are called Langa Voni. Men wear dhoti-kurta or lungi with a kurta. Some of them wear kurta with pajamas too.

2.Assam

Assam is one of the seven sisters in the north. They make the traditional dress of Assam from lustrous silk that is Paat, Eri, and Muga. Eri is used to make winter wears, especially Eri Chador, and Paat is for summer wear, Mekhla Chador. The traditional dress for women is Mekhla Chador, which is a two-piece ensemble. Traditional wear for men is a simple kurta paired with dhoti, along with a hand-woven scarf on their shoulder called Gamusa.

3.Arunachal Pradesh

Arunachal Pradesh is another state among the seven sisters. The traditional dress of Arunachal Pradesh for women is sleeveless Chemsi layered with full sleeves coat like a jacket. They keep it tied with a waistband. The men wear lungi with a sleeveless shirt of silk. The Lungis are woven with different colored threads or with tribal motifs.

4.Bihar

Bihar, the land of Buddha, has Tussar silk saree as the traditional dress for women. The sarees are very vivid in color. Women there wear saree specifically in Sidha Pallu style. The traditional dress of Bihar, for men, is white dhoti with kurta and a white turban.

5.Chhattisgarh

The traditional dress of Chhattisgarh for women is saree that they wear in a specific ‘Kanchmora’ style. They call the saree as Lugda and wear it with a blouse, Pholka.  Men wear Ghotuls, Halbas, Abhuj Marias, Murias, etc. Also, dhoti and headgears of cotton turban fall under the traditional dress.

6.Goa

The party capital goa has the traditional dress, almost similar to any south Indian traditional dress. The traditional dress of Goa is also saree for women. The sarees are stone studded, which they call Nav Vari. They also wear traditional costumes called Pano Bhaju that comprising a sarong (a kind of lungi) paired with a blouse. Men mostly wear casual like half pants and tropical print beach shirts. 

7.Gujarat

The traditional dress of Gujarat is full of vivid colors. Women of Gujarat wear Chaniya choli, a three-piece attire comprising Chaniya- a paneled skirt, Choli- the blouse, and a Dupatta. The dresses have beautiful embroidery with famous mirror work. The Gujarati men wear dhoti or churidar pajama with Bandis, traditionally known as ‘Chorno and Kediyu’ paired with rich coloured turbans as headgear.

8.Haryana

The Haryanvi traditional dress for women is a shirt or blouse with a skirt and a head veil or dupatta. Traditionally they call it Ghagra, Daman, Angia, and Odhni. Their Odhnis have borders of sparkly laces. The men in Haryana wear kurta-pajama or kurta with dhoti. The dress is completed with ‘pagri’ a traditional headgear and Jutti as traditional footwear.

9.Himachal Pradesh

The traditional attire of Himachal Pradesh, comprises Kurtas, Rahide, Lehenga-Choli, and Woollen shawls. Himachal Pradesh is a dominant winter state, so the clothes are mostly woolen. A special shawl made from sheep fur popularly known as ‘pashmina’ is very famous all over the country. The men wear dhoti-kurta paired with their traditional cap or ‘pagri’.

10.Jammu Kashmir

Jammu and Kashmir is a dominant winter state, having warm clothes as their traditional outfit. The men and women both wear Pheran that help to survive the cold. Pathani suit is also a traditional outfit of Jammu and Kashmir. The women wear salwar or churidar with traditional jewelry. The dupattas are zari intricate and tied around their head.

11.Jharkhand

Jharkhand is a state consisting mainly of tribal communities. The traditional dress of Jharkhand for tribal men is Bhagwan, a one-piece cloth. The non-tribal men wear casuals and dhoti, kurta, pajama on special occasions. The tribal women wear a two-piece outfit, Parthan, and Panchi, as their traditional dress. The no-tribal women wear the Tussar silk saree and blouse.

12.Karnataka

Karnataka is famous for its Mysore silk saree. The traditional dress of Karnataka women is this richly textured Mysore silk sarees. But the interesting thing about their outfit is the unique ways they drape it based upon different zones like Kodagu, Karavali, north, and south Karnataka. The Kannada men wear dhoti known as Panche paired with a shirt and topped with the traditional headgear Mysore Para.

13.Kerala

The traditional dress of Kerala is known for its simplicity. The women wear elegant saree with a specifically golden border also known as Mundum Neriyathum. Mundum is the lower part and Neriyathum is the upper part that is tucked into the blouse or put over the left shoulder. Kanchipuram silk sarees are also a legacy of the state. The Kerala men wear mundu also known as ‘Kaili’ a version of lungi. The mundu paired with a shirt and a cloth put over the shoulders that interestingly denote the social standing.

14.Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh is known for its Bhandhni cloth. The women there wear lehenga choli with a specific dupatta known as Lugra. The traditional dress of Madhya Pradesh for men is relatively simple, comprising dhoti-kurta or shirt, topped off with a jacket called Bandi or Mirzai. They wear a unique headgear called ‘Safa’. 

15.Maharashtra

The traditional dress of Maharashtra is very popular all over the country. Famous for their rich culture and bright colors Maharashtrian sarees are love. They are known as Nauwari Saree. The sarees become unique because of its draping style. The lower part looks like a dhoti that makes sure petticoat is unnecessary to wear underneath. The men wear dhoti also known as ‘Dhotar’ paired with a tight fit short-sleeve shirt called ‘Petha’ and completed with headgear or ‘Pagdi’. 

16.Manipur

The women of Manipur wear sarong wrapped around their chest and a skirt called, Phanek. Accompanied by a woven shawl or dupatta known as, Innaphi draped around the upper body.  The traditional dress of Manipur wears dhoti (typically 4-5 meters) paired with a jacket also known as ‘Bundis’ as their traditional outfit and a white Pagdi as headgear.

17.Mizoram

The traditional dress of Mizoram is very gorgeous and has a distinct pattern in it. The women wear a black and white color dress known as ‘Puan’ and paired with ‘Puanchi’ or ‘Kawrechi’, typically a blouse. The Mizo men wear a long cloth (7 feet by 5 feet) with a red, black, and white color pattern and paired with a white color cloth with red bands covering from throat to thighs.

18.Meghalaya

The women of Meghalaya wear ‘Jainsen’ as their traditional outfit. It is an unstitched garment made from mulberry silk. It is also a state that has many tribes living in, like Garo, Jayantia, and Khasi. The women of the Garo tribe wear Ghana as their traditional outfit. It is also an unstitched cloth tied around their waist and paired with a blouse. The traditional dress of Meghalaya shows the vibrant culture of tribal communities. The men of the Khasi tribe wear ‘Jymphong’, a piece of unstitched cloth topped with a long sleeve coat that without a collar. The men of the Garo tribe wear loincloth as their traditional outfit.

19.Nagaland

Another state of seven sisters is Nagaland it is also a tribal-dominated state. The traditional dress for Nagaland women is ‘Angami’. It is a two-piece outfit comprising o ‘Vatchi’, a sleeveless top worn over the Neikhro, and a white skirt Pfemhou.  The traditional attire for naga men is a kilt paired with a wrapper and completed with a shawl called Ratapfe. They are knee-length and mostly blue.

20.Odisha 

Odisha women wear Katki and Shambalpuri saree traditionally. The saree is of 9 yards and has traditional prints on it. The traditional outfit for Oriya men is the dhoti, kurta, and Gamocha. They wear dhotis with pleats in front are called, Konchas and those in the back are called Malkonchas.

21.Punjab

Punjabis, known for their fun-loving nature, and when it comes to their traditional dress, that is also fun to wear. The traditional dress of Punjab for women is a salwar suit. Their suits with heavily worked zari or stones. The suits are also known as ‘Patiala suit’ The men wear kurta and Muktsari pajamas along with their turban known as ‘pagri’. The traditional ‘Juttis’ is also an inevitable part of the attire.

22.Rajasthan

Rajasthan is the state that represents Indian royalty at its best. The traditional dress of Rajasthan has a rustic vibe to it. The women wear beautiful Ghagra paired with Kanchli or Kurtis and cover their heads with dupatta. The men wear very elegant churidar pajama, kurta, and Angrakha, patka, or Kamarbandh, paired with white Safa.

23.Sikkim

The traditional dress of Sikkim is similar for men and women. The dress of men is called Bakhu or Kho that is paired with loosely fitted pants. They accessorize the outfit with a leather belt and leather boot.  The women wear the outfit over a full sleeve blouse. They also have two traditional attires called Dumvum and Nyamrek.

24.Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu folks are very simple, and so is their traditional outfit. The traditional outfit of Tamil Nadu for women is a saree with a typical golden border. They have a traditional wear saree, Kanchipuram or Kanjivaram. The small girl’s outfit is called Pavada, and the grownup’s dress is called Dhavani. The men of Tamil Nadu wear simple lungi with a shirt as their traditional outfit and an Angavastra put on their shoulders.

25.Telangana

Telangana has a similar traditional outfit as any other south Indian state. The women wear saree, Langa Vonis, and shalwar kameez as their traditional attire. The men wear the traditional dhoti known as Pancha.

26.Tripura

The traditional dress of Tripura consists of two parts for both men and women. The women wear a dress consisting of Risa, Rikutu, and Rigwani. The men also wear Rikutu paired with a shirt known as Kamchwlwi Borok along with a Gamcha.

27.Uttar Pradesh

The traditional dress of Uttar Pradesh resembles the entire country’s basic outfits. The women wear saree, ghagra, or shalwar kameez. The men generally wear dhoti-kurta, lungi, or pajama, along with a turban or topi.

28.Uttarakhand

The women of Uttarakhand wear skirts known as Ghagri paired with a blouse and dupatta. The traditional dress of Uttarakhand for men is a very common lungi or dhoti topped with a shirt and a Gol topi or Jawahar topi on the head. 

29.West Bengal

West Bengal has a very rich culture, and its traditional attire is very famous and distinct. The women wear white or off-white saree with a deep red border. The fabric is mostly silk or Tussar. The traditional dress of west Bengal for men is Dhuti and Panjabi. The Dhuti has a Koncha, which is a trail of pleated cloth that is held in hand.
